Meeting the Food & Environmental Challenge:
Resource efficiency, innovation and governance
27th March 2012, The Square, Brussels
Overview
In March 2008, the European Landowners Organization (ELO) and Syngenta came together to create a new Forum in which the future of agriculture could be debated, from a European perspective, and where the main challenges facing the sector could be addressed and the necessary responses understood, discussed and agreed.
Today, the Forum has a programme of activity, focused on the food and environmental security agenda, across the European region. However, the main platform for the Forum for the Future of Agriculture remains its Annual Conference which takes place every Spring in Brussels. This Conference has now established itself as the premier meeting place for those who have a stake in the future of agriculture and has been addressed by European Commissioners, MEPs, National Government Ministers, Industry Leaders, NGOs, International Organisations, including OECD and FAO, and academics.
The purpose of these Forums is to stimulate an open discussion on the future of European and world agriculture, and assess what should and what can be achieved over time, attaching equal weight to two challenges: food security and environmental security.

The conference addressed the state of Common Agriculture Policy, challenges that land managers currently face, and possible solutions to achieve better farming. In particular, the 4th Forum for the Future of Agriculture focused on:

• Sustainability and environmental security in farming
• Riches and servitudes of the food chain
• Rural areas: Are they loosers of globalisation?
